Kubuntu - back and gone

As I told in my previous post, I am now using Linux at work. I have been running Arch at home since October, and I never looked back, but in this case, the servers are Ubuntu 9.04, so I decided to give Kubuntu a new chance. I installed Kubuntu 9.04 to stay in sync with the servers.

So, I installed it myself, then activated the Kubuntu backport PPAs to get the latest KDE version. Well, it was not the latest, but at least it was 4.3.1. It looks like they had stopped updating the Jaunty short before Karmic's release. Well, it wasn't bad.

Using Linux at work

As some of you may know, I switched jobs in February. I left Accenture after almost 3 years there as a software architect and team leader. I'm now working at a small consulting firm, Enerminds, as a Java and C++ developer. The interesting thing about it is that I was offered to use Linux as my main desktop. After almost 13 years in IT, it's the first time I'm using it as my main desktop at work, and it has been an awesome experience.

Downtime expected

During the next week there will be probably some downtime of this blog. I am probably installing Arch on this server, as I am fed up with my current distro, and the perspectives are not good for the next release. The local Ubuntu community was the main thing holding me from switching, and those ties were severed too in the last few weeks, so it's time to move on. Anyway, expect this blog to be offline over the next days.

UPDATE:

A good technical explanation on why Kubuntu is criticized:

Ooops, they did it again

Even after this, the KDE 4.3.1 packages in Kubuntu 9.04 again has some strings containing %n. Since those packages are probably the ones going into Karmic, there is not much hope for a good transalated release. This is the sign of a broken process.

I tried to report this in Launchpad, but it would error out.

UPDATE: I was finally able to file a bug report in Launchpad. Here it is: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdepim/+bug/425254

Synchronize Kontact with a Nokia N95 - Updated

Dear Lazyweb, I have been googling a lot but I haven't found a way to synchronize my Nokia N95 with Kontact. I can plug it in via USB (I can get a bluetooth dongle if necessary).

Is there a way to sync my phone or the required pieces are still in the work?

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: Several people suggested a guide to sync by using the Opensync-syncML plugin. The issue now is where can I find an Opensync plugin for Akonadi? There was one for KDE 3.5, but not for KDE4.

Translations in Kubuntu still in bad shape

The translations for Kubuntu still suck. I am running KDE 4.3, and there are several string for KDE PIM that are still translated like "%n días" (%n days) instead of "%1 días" (%1 days). It looks to me like some system, Rosetta or whatever, doing a carpet-bombing translation without taking into account the parameters. To make matters worse, last time I checked in Rosetta there were suggestions for those translations, but they were still not approved or not included in the translations.
