KMyMoney releases second beta for KDE4 and maintenance version for KDE3

The KMyMoney Team is proud to announce the immediate availability of version 3.96 of KMyMoney. This is the second beta release for the KDE4 platform, after only 1 and a half month of hard work, stabilizing and fixing bugs found during the first beta release.

KDE SC 4.4 Release Party in Buenos Aires

For all those in Buenos Aires or its surroundings, we'll be having a meeting to celebrate the release of KDE SC 4.4.

This next Saturday 13th, at 19:00 we'll meet at Dr Mason, a bar known to be friendly to FLOSS people of all nature (it has been home to a couple of Ubuntu release parties). It is located in Araoz 1199, Buenos Aires. Cost is about AR$ 30 for some beer and snacks.

We'll gather to talk about the features of the new releases, upcoming events, and of course, have a beer and socialize. Here you can find more information about it: http://kde.org.ar/node/54

KDE Finance group mailing list

We now have a mailing list where all the KDE Finance apps can subscribe and get together. For now, it's Skrooge, Kraft and KMyMoney, but I'm sure others will follow.

If you are in any way related or you are simply willing to help us get our act together, the mailing list is kde-finance-apps@kde.org. Thanks, David!

Now, to plan our first meeting to conquer the finance world!

Moving is a tough job

Particularly when you have lived in a place for 10 years. I'm not talking about myself, because I have moved around a lot. I'm talking about KMyMoney, and our slow, gradual move under KDE's umbrella. Here's an extract from a mail I sent to all our mailing lists, giving some details about where to go if you need to get help on a particular topic.

KMyMoney-SVN package available for Arch

I took over a package that had been disowned and modified it to make it build on Arch with libofx. Aqbanking is still pending because I haven't found a suitable Qt4 package, but I will modify it when I do.

You can find the package in AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33252

If you use kdemod, modify the PKGBUILD to depend on kdemod-kdelibs-debug instead of on kdelibs.

Release schedule for KMyMoney

After releasing 3.95, I started a discussion about the schedule for future releases. There were two issues, I think, which affected the possible schedules. First, the feasibility to make quick releases and build upon that to have a stable release in a sensible timeframe. Second, whether we should move to a tighter integration with KDE SC or not.

My aim is to have a stable release within 6-8 months. For that, we had to change our usual 5-6 month release cycle, and have quick releases which would allow us to build upon the feedback from battlefield.

One week after beta 1

It's been 10 days since we released KMyMoney 3.95, and we are still alive, which is not little. The main problems we have had were with KDE SC 4.4 beta. For GPG, we used libkleo, but that API was not stable yet, and it changed in 4.4. So, Thomas changed to use gpgme++ directly instead, skipping libkleo altogether, and now SVN works fine in 4.4. Besides, there were quirks here and there, but nothing serious.

Bending the rules is a no, no

In case you missed it, here is the transcript of an excellent talk by Cory Doctorow on copyright, licenses and digital restrictions management. It outlines some actions by the media publishers that I think explain exactly why I go ballistic when I look at what has become the relationship between companies and government.

KMyMoney for KDE 4 beta 1 has been released

The announcement is up on the dot. The first beta of KMyMoney for the KDE 4 Platform has been released! We started in May, due to an innocent email sent by Laurent Montel, which triggered a series of events that led us to this point.

Coming to the end of a great year

Tomorrow Monday is the release of KMyMoney 3.95. This will signal the end of a great and challenging year to me, and of course, as every end, it is the beginning of something else.
