Because we had the time, or better said, I had the time. Someone asked how come we were starting the work on a port to KDE4, even before our very clear intent of releasing 1.0 for KDE3. Well, I had the opportunity to take a 2-month leave of absence, kind of, and then I had some free time to work on KMyMoney. Since we were already in feature- and string-freeze, I talked to the rest of the team and we agreed that I would start the work on the KDE4 port. They will join once the 1.0 is out the door. BTW, there will be some nice surprises for the 1.0, which they won't commit until the last minute, so it will be a surprise to all of us. Or at least, that's what I heard.
I was starting my leave when Laurent contacted Thomas, asking about the status of the port. Thomas pointed him to me, and voilá! the work on a port began. As per Laurent's suggestion, I uploaded the code to playground and we began a phase of heavy fixing, to make the code compile under KDE4. Later on, Nicolas Lécureuil joined the effort. They have been doing one hell of a job since then. The application runs and it can open a file, save it, show some data, and even edit most of the data. One big area that I am still working on is the ledger, which is the main part of an accounting application. It is one of the most complicated pieces of the code, and I haven't worked on it very often before this.
The last couple of weeks I have had some personal issues, so I haven't had much time to work on the code. I hope things will go back to normal shortly. Anyway, Nicolas and Laurent have been hard at work, and things are moving forward. Perhaps we can through kdereview before 4.4? Who knows.

Let them install side-by-side
One thing I've found frustrating with KDE4 is the approach of not permitting parallel installs of things (e.g., Amarok) so issues can be sorted out with the new version while the old version is still available.
Is there any chance you can set this up so that the KMyMoney-kde4 can install beside KMyMoney-kde3? That would be awesome.
We will probably change the
We will probably change the name sometime in the future, so that would allow it to install side-by-side. However, the file format might change a bit during the port, and that would prevent you to use the same file for both versions. I can't make you any promises on that.
KMyMoney and Koffice
Hi!
I really love KMyMoney, I use it weekly for my accounts and cannot wait for the KDE4 version.
I just wondered, would it be beneficial if KMyMoney was part of Koffice?
KMyMoney uses some parts of
KMyMoney uses some parts of KOffice, but we think it stands on a category of its own, together with other financial applications. We are working on creating a group of KDE financial groups, to work together.
Great
If the port to KDE4 follows the 1.0 release, I just can say : great !
It's kind of important because KDE3.5 is not so well maintained and it will become difficult to get it through the official repositories of the distro very soon.
