After some deliberation, the development team decided to stick to the original name. Even if there were many good submissions and unprecedented participation of the community (at least by KMM standards), none was able to gain the heart of the team over the original name. I liked some of the proposed names, but mine is only 1 vote.
So, over the last weeks, Cristian dedicated time to drop the '2' of all the code and configuration files. As with any big change, there were some glitches here and there, but they should all be fixed now. A side-effect of this change is that you should be able to run both versions (kde3 and kde4) side-by-side.
Why bumping the version number from 1.0 to 4.0? Well, there were major changes, so releasing it as 1.1 made no justice to it. Then, dropping the '2' on the name, and releasing KMyMoney 2.0 was going to be kind of confusing. The same applies for 3.0. KMyMoney 3.0, for KDE4. All in all, it was easiest and clearest to just bump version number to 4.0 and be done with it. In time, if we sync our releases with KDE, we will bump it up to 4.5 or 4.6.
We are now working hard on fixing the last issues to release a beta, which will be version 3.95. The pending issues at the moment are the GPG encryption and a crash when leaving the application idle on the back (my guess is that's something to do with showEvent() catching an event it shouldn't).

Good! I do not really care
Good!
I do not really care about the name, only the great features. I have recently discovered kmymoney2 and I am very happy with it.
Good job, eager to try the kde4 version
+1 for numbering
I voted for the name change, but hey!, as you said in one of my post, stick to the name you like best ! And I agree with your new numbering, it totally makes sense. The 1.0 number does not reflect the level of maturity and stability that KMyMoney has.

I think this is the right
I think this is the right decision, the KMyMoney name is very well established and I'm sure the development team has a lot of affection for it, not to mention many of us who have been using the application for several years now.
Also adding the '4' suffix provides clarity with respect to KDE.
I assume that once KMyMoney 4.0 is released this will be the focus of ongoing development but the KDE3 version will be frozen?
KMyMoney name change?
So even though 70% vote to change the name you decide to go against the general populace and leave it the same?
Re: KMyMoney name change?
Even if it would have been 90%, it is up to the developers working hard on this product to come to a final decision.
For me the voting result just says "we as users would be fine with using a different name", but that doesn't mean "we voted for it, so you better do it!".
Also, most of the people in the poll also stated they would still be fine with the old name. So, afterall, the poll result was relative, and still, the decision is up to the devs.
Personally, fine conclusion, nothing to say against it.
Congrats!

Well I understand that completely, but why even bother to ask? from a users standpoint its kind of like ok we want your opinion but we're not going to use it.
"For me the voting result just says "we as users would be fine with using a different name", but that doesn't mean "we voted for it, so you better do it!"."
That's not what I took away from it, I saw that 70% of the users agree a new name would be a lot better for the project than what it's already named. After all 70% is a huge margin not just a few points but a lot more than half your user base.
Personally I don't have a preferance, I just happened across the voting, read what was posted and saw what seemed to be a complete disregard for the populace opinion.
What you do with it is your choice, do what you want, but that's how so many companies and projects fail, by not listening to their customers.
internal names are not usefull for the public
I have never used this application and only know it from planetkde. And its name I assume is only known to those who have used it before.
If I would want to recommend it to someone else I would like it to have a name that sound nice, sympathetic and self explanatory . A name starting with K and ending with a number is the complete opposite - it is nerdy.
I do not think any non-nerd will take me serious if I would recommend a program with that name...
Quicken sound so serious
Quicken sound so serious. Yet, it is the leading application in this field. GnuCash is the leading free software app. So it's either quick and dirty, or a cash cow. It looks like people look at things beyond the name.
Numbers are not as clear cut as they seem
Let me chime in. Many of the people who voted for a change, were actually voting for dropping the '2' on the name, as stated on the comments. Many others were for dropping the 'K', or calling it simply Money, similarly to what it's called today. So, in the end the result was closer to 50%-50% than 30%-70%. We do appreciate all the comments, and I have to say I was surprised by the amount of submissions. I hope we don't alienate anyone for not making the change and this should not be taken as a display of disregard for the opinion of our community. We take feedback very seriously and try to do our best to honor the wishes of our community, with common sense. The growth we have experienced during the last year alone, not only in developers, but in other areas like translation and documentation serve as a sample. As I said, we tried to be very clear from the beginning about the possibility of not going through with the change even if there was a majority of votes for it, so I hope we didn't hurt anyone's feelings. If anything, this may serve as a lesson for the future.
Names matter
Make no mistake having a cool easy to rember name is a very good thing. So in the long run a better name than the nerdy KMyMoney would have been better.
Your geek users and developers may like it, but it is not going to convince anyone to try it. A good name maybe would.
But you are not alone with this .. the whole KDE (another bad name) desktop suffers from it. It all sounds like the translation to English was done by german prisoners in some rissian gulag.
KDE etc is not BMW or Quicken (no marketing billions and no public recognition) so good names matter a lot.
I wish FOSS people had mandatory marketing classes ;)
(I just trying to help here)
I did have marketing classes
You do have a presumption that we are all nerds, which is not true. I study administration, thank you very much.
And I'm still not convinced of your argument.
Name recognition is one thing, but nerdy or not is in the eye of the beholder. Frankly, we have all kind of users, most of them not nerds nor geeks not any particular category, but regular users.
While well intended, your comments suffer a lack of reality touch. You do not know the application, and you do not know the community behind it. You do not even use similar applications. Arm-chair commenting is nice, but sometimes you need a deeper involvement to make an informed opinion.
Ones bubble can be very comfy
Well if you are soo sure that KMyMoney is a good name why don't you drive a KMyCar or buy a KMyTV?
If you don't believe me just ask a few marketing professionals for their opinion or analyse the App Store and compare apps with iMyApp-type of names to apps with good names and see how popular they are.
There was a talk at GCDS that basically said the same thing that I am saying, but you listen to whoever you want to listen to.
Enough bikeshedding
You just pop up out of nowhere, you don't know the app, you don't know what it's about. You seem to know everything just because you took a look at the poll result, and you seem to be very sure of what you say is the best possible way.
I have stopped listening to you at this moment. I will stick to reading what our users say, not only on the forum but on other forums, mailing lists and other communication channels that you may have skipped in your rush to bring your enlightenment to us.
Enough bikeshedding for one thread.
Well put
Makes sense, I don't think you have alienated anyone.
I didn't vote but the decision seems to make sense.
