KMyMoney getting ready for the 1.0 release
We are in the final steps toward releasing KMyMoney 1.0. It has been over 2 years since the last stable release and over that time the development team has been busy building a lot of features, while maintaining and even improving stability and performance.
A lot has changed over that time. I joined the mailing list about 3 years ago, and lots of people from that time are no longer around. A lot of people have joined and contributed their work, and many are nowhere to be seen now. Features were requested, added, polished, deprecated, replaced, refined. Documentation became stagnant and outdated until we started an effor a few months ago, which fortunately was well received and it is still being updated as we speak. Lots of sleepless hours were put all around the globe to make sure we had a good running application, whether it be the stable or the CVS version. Countless discussions via our mailing list and then the forums, with Thomas usually leading the way with a calm and senseful tone.
To me it has been an enrichning experience. Going from a list lurker, through contributing code and helping with the mailing list and documentation, to coordinating the KDE4 port, it has been a long and satisfying ride on the free software world.
We have spent the last months ironing out all details to have a great 1.0 release. It marks over 8 years of development since the project started. It is impossible to know how many people use it, but we know we have users scattered all over the world, and it is rewarding to get their comments and feedback. It is also because of this that the project has always tried to err on the conservative side when it comes to releases. And even if this will be probably our last feature-release for KDE3, that approach will continue onto KDE4, with a focus on first porting and then taking advantage of the features offered by the new platform. No rewriting from scratch, no big new features until we have ironed out all porting quirks and we can have a usable application with the same set of features as the previous version.
Now we are approaching a big milestone to us, and I hope it is as good to everyone as it will be to us. If all things fall into place, we should be releasing in about 2 weeks. August 16th is the tentative date, but we will review it if necessary. There is still a lot to do, updating the final bits of documentation, making sure we don't commit any last-minute bugs, preparing release notes and announcements, packaging for the main distros and so on, but we are confident that we are in the best possible shape.
Oh, and we will have some last-minute surprises for those who like some bling even on a finance application. Stay tuned!
